The Hon. Arch Bevis served as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1990 to 2010, with particular responsibilities in Defence and Industrial Relations. Prior to entering Parliament, Mr Bevis was an organiser and Deputy General Secretary of the Queensland Teachers Union and a teacher.
From 1994 - 1996 he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defence (with responsibilities for Defence Reserves, Emergency Management Australia and the development of defence guidelines for Australian industry involvement).
Following the 1996 election, Mr Bevis was appointed to a number of shadow cabinet positions. From 1996 to 1998 he was shadow Minister for Defence, and from 1998 to 2001 Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations.
Following the 2004 election, Mr Bevis was the Shadow Minister for Defence Planning, Procurement and Personnel and Shadow Minister Assisting the Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations (2004-05) and was Shadow Minister for Homeland Security; Aviation and Transport Security (2005-06). He was appointed Shadow Minister for Homeland Security and Territories in December 2006. In 2007 the Justice and Customs portfolios were added to Homeland Securities and Territories.
During his time in Federal Parliament, he served on a number of Parliamentary committees including as the Chair of the Joint Defence sub-committee from 2007 - 2010.
On 12 May 2011 the Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia appointed the Honourable Arch Bevis as a Member of the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal for a period of five years.
