Tobruk Lines, Holsworthy

8 April 2014 to 9 April 2014

The Tribunal conducted an inspection of Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) at Tobruk Lines, Holsworthy on 8 and 9 April 2014 in support of Matter 16 of 2013. The purpose of the visit was to gain information about and an understanding of the increased responsibilities and enduring disabilities experienced by SOCOMD personnel.

The Tribunal witnessed equipment displays from support staff and operators and met with a number of key personnel. Demonstrations at 2 Commando Regiment and Special Operations Engineering Regiment provided briefs on roles, personnel categories and equipment. Also addressed were restrictions on personnel such as notice to move and security implications.The Tribunal was briefed by personnel from the Special Forces Training Centre and Parachute Training School with a focus on training and the maintenance of specialist skills.

On the second day of the inspection, the Tribunal was briefed by the Commanding Officer of the Special Air Service Regiment, who described the capabilities of the regiment and the extreme conditions under which the unit operates.

At the end of the inspection, a question and answer session was held with all Commanding Officers, Regimental Sergeant Majors and key personnel the Tribunal had met during the inspection. The closing address was given by the Special Forces Commander Australia, who emphasised key priorities such as workforce mobility and Special Forces support.
